Purple saxifrage is a small, mat forming alpine, native to Iceland as well as the entire arctic region in the northern hemisphere and mountains such as the Alps and the Rocky Mountains. It needs well drained soil, but moist. It grows where there is snow cover during the winter months and flowers once the snow melts. It is difficult to grow in areas where there in not consistent snow cover during winter, mine didn't grow well and died after a few years.
