Showy chinese gentian flowers very late, in September and into October weather permitting. At the time it flowers, the sun is low on the horizon and that needs to be taken into account when choosing a spot for it as it prefers a sunny spot, at least for part of the day. It is a bit finicky about the soil, it needs to be fertile, well drained and slightly acidic, so the soil must be lime-free.
