Dog's tooth violet is a low-growing woodland plant that unfortunately was short-lived in my garden. The position might have been to blame, it is so petite that it needs to placed where it's not shaded out by larger plants. It needs fertile, humus rich soil, so the soil should be mixed with compost and leaves. It might even be good to cover the plant with leaves during winter.
