'Pictum' is a variety of Japanese painted fern with bicoloured foliage, white and burgundy, that light up a shady spot in the garden. It needs fertile, humus rich soil and good shelter from wind. It has not grown vigorously in my garden, but has survived a few years. It gets a very late start in spring so it's important to mark the spot so it won't be disturbed.
