This plant has been rather of a mystery to me, but after quite of bit of searching, I believe it is purple stemmed aster. The flowers are fairly small in large clusters. It needs support or the flower stalks will top over. It is a lovely plant that flowers in August. The only drawback is that it spreads rather quickly with rhizomes, so it needs to be kept in check every spring. Very hardy.
