Common columbine or granny's bonnet is a hardy and fairly shade tolerant columbine that outdoes other columbines by miles and miles when it comes to self-seeding. You might say it's the columbine that has given all columbines a bad rap in that department. It also crosses easily with other columbine varieties which can, potentially, produce some nice hybrids. However, the amount of seedlings produced might be frowned upon by gardeners, so it is advisable to cut the flower stalks before they go to seed.
